Correct, narrower tires are better for snow. Notice the rusty rotors? It doesn't leave the driveway around snow and salt. I've got an old pickup for those days.I was always under the impression a more narrow tire is better in the snow. I'm running a square 255 set up on my 4 and had no issue this morning waking up to a fresh snow fall in my 25 mile drive to the office.

Never too old! I've been snowboarding since way before it was cool. Before a lot of places allowed it for that matter. Of all the powersports I've experienced from 2 wheels to 4, snowmobiling is the holy grail for me. I heard SnoHawks were trying to make a comeback. Any time I see a snowbike on the trail I have to laugh a little as that would have been a dream come true if they were popular in the 80's.Being in my 60's I'm mostly done sliding cars around in the snow, especially a $100K car.
After many years of skiing, I tried mono-skiing, then snowboarding, followed by snowmobiling. Then there was the day I learned of the existence of these things. If I'm going outside to play in winter, this is what I'm doing.
The Snowbikes are primarily ridden in 2 and 3rd gears. 1st tops out at about 5mph. You can never use 5th, they simply doesn't make enough power to turn a track that fast. 4th can be used on trails where you had time to fully max out 3rd and then cruise in fourth. It's not accelerating or going up an incline in 4th. What's the average 450 making, 50hp? My 2007 800cc Snowhawk is making 160hp, so nearly as much as the converted ZX10 Ninja. It does just over 100mph. My kids couldn't keep up with me in the trails, but they'd drive away from me on a lake with their Yamaha SRX 700's. They only made 140hp, but would do right about 110mph.The extreme majority of my riding is in da nort woods yooper area. We generally stick to the trails rarely going off trail as there are not a lot of places legally to go. I've never ridden one but I can only imagine the amount of space you'd need to get beyond 3rd on a 450. I've seen a few videos of guys converting their ZX10 Ninjas to snobikes. I think I would rather live to see another day.
