According to GM Authority, rumors suggest the next-generation (Gen 6) small-block V8s—produced at GM's Tonawanda plant with an $888M investment—will include 5.7L and 6.6L displacements.

The 5.7L is expected to serve as a workhorse for GM’s full-size trucks (Silverado, Sierra), likely replacing or supplementing the current 5.3L L84 in base and mid-tier models.

The 6.6L, however, appears positioned as a high-performance variant. Speculation points to it powering:
  • The mid-engine C8 Corvette Grand Sport (replacing the current LT2 6.2L),
  • A potential rear-wheel-drive successor to the Camaro (if revived),
  • And the next CT5
Naturally aspirated output is rumored to exceed 500 hp, with some insiders suggesting a supercharged version could push well over 700 hp—making it a strong candidate for a future Blackwing flagship.

While nothing is confirmed, the displacement jump and performance focus align with GM’s strategy to differentiate its ICE lineup amid electrification pressure.

Thoughts? Plausible, or wishful thinking?

I wonder if this has anything to do with the current 6.6L offering in the Silverago/Sierra 2500 that's exempt from AFM/DOD and Start/Stop.

As if rolling out a new design will fix any of the QC problems that have caused the failures in the 6.2.
Other rumors were that they aren't outsourcing any of the engine build for the new V8s. At least if there's another recall, GM won't have any one else to point the finger at.

It all sounds plausible to me. I do find it curious how fast they pivoted from EV back to ICE. I guess ICE is easier, cheaper, and greater customer appeal. I guess the fast pivot caveat leaves me with I'll believe the next gen non-hybrid V/Blackwing when I see it.

I'm sure they have had endless meetings on the subject. I hope they do fix the issues. Reliable V8's have been their bread and butter for decades. The recent debacle is definitely a black eye for GM.

When the government stops subsidizing each EV sold and also stops giving out free money to build/retrofit factories the free market realities become crystal clear. For certain urban/suburban commuters EVs are good/great options. For just about everyone else, they aren't there yet.

Relaxed CAFE standards also helped I'm sure.
