Rev limiter = kill switch

I hung onto 2nd gear a little too long recently, and was punished sharply for it. Obviously you're in a hurry if you're redlining the car, so it was a nasty surprise when it simply shut down in response to my late shift.

It brought back memories of the bad ol' days in my E34 530i. That car lived for redline, and it was so quiet that it was easy to reach unexpectedly.

I thought I had hit redline in the BW before, and that it much more gently held you at redline rather than whacking the ignition to cool things off.

So I'm crazy ? It never holds redline, but always just whacks it until you back off ?

What do you mean "shut down" ?
Is this something beyond the fuel cutoff?

I don't know if it cuts fuel or spark or both, but i nearly hit my head on the steering wheel when it happened.

Like i said, I thought I had hit it before in a much less violent way.

That does not sound normal, but maybe you were on the red longer than you thought and it is a safety system? I have seen countless videos of guys bouncing off the redline, and they never get shut down. I have hit mine multiple times on both my 22 and 24 and also never had that happen.

Just curious, were you wearing your seatbelt? That should catch before your head is almost banging off the wheel.

2nd gear still has some leverage vs a higher gear, so seems plausible that a combination of that, you not expecting it, and a dash of dramatic reaction influenced your reaction? Try it again and report back
