CT4-V Blackwing solution specifically detailed out, but posting here as this seems like a topic, and solution, relevant to CT4/5 folks in general. So I have been looking around quite a while for a dash phone mount that meets the following requirements:
1) doesn't look like some hillbilly kluge hacktacular Temu mess and should look like it was meant to be there, semi-aesthetically appealing to the car interior design
2) positions the phone so I can easily and safely view/access it from driver's seat
3) does NOT block the view/access of vehicle's control surfaces such as HVAC, etc. by both driver and passenger
Why would I want to do want this when the car has wireless charging and CarPlay, shouldn't that properly suffice is a question you would/should properly ask?!? Well, a couple things my phone provides that CarPlay cannot: 1) For my commute I need to see Google Maps traffic overlay. Not navigation directions. I have made this same 43 mile each way commute for 30+yrs. I know every possible way, back road, cut off, bypass, etc. waaaay better than Google ever will
So just show me where the traffic jams are and I'll figure it out from there. This is not available thru CarPlay and 2) My work applications (MS Teams most specifically) are security locked by the company and therefore will not work thru CarPlay. So other than accept a Teams call, I cannot join a Teams mtg or Teams call someone without the direct iPhone interface (F'ed up? Yes, but nothing I can do about it short of quitting
)
Reasonable mounts (not violating requirement #1 in the first line of this post) come from A-tach and ProClip. Both are awesome companies and I have rocked their mounts in multiple other rides... BUT for the CT4, both companies solutions put the phone mount such that it block the passenger side HVAC and seat heat/cool controls. While this meets requirement #2 in the first line of this post, it totally violates requirement #3.
Lots of hacktacular clip-on HVAC vents, suction cups, or screw/glue/adhesive onto dash solutions online through various Amazon, Temu, xyz, etc. places Yeah, not gonna do that cuz, well, they are hacktacular (violates requirement #1) and not happening on a car of this class in my driveway.
So, with zero commercially available solutions meeting my requirements, I turned to my engineering instincts and capabilities. The triangular trim piece to the right of the infotainment screen seemed like a great place to anchor a mount for a charger. Phone would be mid-upper dash height and above/away from all other controls, and not intruding on passenger space or HVAC control view/access. And it pops out nicely, with a bottom hook and top clip mount connection which should hold be able to hold the added load of a phone+charger.
Bought a replacement trim part (84763137) for $12 to work with (in case I f'ed up, could still get back to stock) and collected a few 1/4-20 mount parts to get from trim plate to a 17mm ball mount for a phone charger.
Drilled hole, plus small channel for charger cable, in the trim panel to connect the mount parts. Added 1/2" x 1/8" aluminum stiffener piece on backside of trim panel (necessary to avoid the trim panel bowing out under the moment created by the phone mount load) and closed-cell foam shims under the OEM trim clip to make sure it has extra "stick force" given the additional load from the phone+mount. Belkin MagSafe charger attaches nicely.
USB charger cable routes right to left under the infotainment screen, down drivers side console trim to center console, across to passenger side of console, then down passenger side of console then under side trim back. Mates to USB-C right angle extension that plugs into console armrest storage area and exits through a hole drilled in front-right corner of console storage area. Modified 1/2" hole plug and neoprene gasket nicely fill the hole in the console side.
Works well and looks like it sort-of was designed to be there
