Totaled?

Friday afternoon outside Traverse City MI on a 45 mph two lane road a little red Hyundai went straight when the road curved and crossed into my lane. She clipped the rear end of the minivan in front of me and plowed into the drivers side rear door of my car. Apparently no serious injuries to anyone (modern cars can be marvels that way) but I've got an arc of bruises on my left side. My BW is in much worse shape. Beside the sheet metal damage, you can see a half shaft laying on the flatbed.

Any thoughts on likelihood of being totaled would be welcome. My policy with Cincinnati will total it if the cost to repair exceeds $47K.

Was it a FIB? 🤣 Sorry, couldn’t help myself.

Sorry for your loss but thank goodness you are OK. That wall of airbags is very assuring knowing we are all driving a very safe vehicle.

That’s gonna be totaled. Be sure to see a doctor and get all of your injuries documented and DO NOT sign any insurance claim agreement for a few weeks, as that bruising could be torn muscles or ligaments. Her insurance will likely offer you a quick settlement and say you only have 30 days or so to make a claim.

PDR caught the crash - see video. I moved to the right a bit but there wasn't a whole lot of room on the shoulder. In hindsight, I might have avoided her if I hadn't braked, but my mind wasn't able to process it that way. Plus braking did reduce our kinetic energy significantly. Not sure the other driver ever braked.

Wow, glad to hear you’re ok. I’m fairly sure they will say it’s totaled. When I had my car a part to installed all the CF1 & CF2 carbon fiber, highly doubtful the inner bracing of the body didn’t get bent up and not repairable.

Nice to see all the air bags for protection.

I’m also glad I have a PDR always running on mine.

Please keep us updated how it all turns out. Wishing you the best that you’re made as whole as possible.

Thanks for the encouragement, I sure hope it's totaled!
Michigan has a strong no-fault law, so I would recover any medical from my insurance company. It's a fairly high hurdle to sue for pain and suffering there, most likely her insurer is off the hook.

Looks totaled. If not, sneak into the wrecker yard and light it on 🔥 :)

Sorry for what happened. Nice that the PDR caught it. I keep mine on for that very reason. Glad you weren't injured too badly. Car looks totaled, though. I really would not want one back that had been that damaged. Good luck with remedies.

dang, im glad everyone is okay. didnt realize you can run the PDR as a dash cam. ill be taking note on this

Dang! Sorry for your loss as I'm sure it's totalled, BUT glad to hear you're OK. I wouldn't want it after it's fixed, plus it'll be gone for months getting fixed.

To others, yes, PDR will work as a FRONT dash cam. It can be set to go on automatically on start up. If you have HD Surround Vision, that works the front, sides and rear cameras.

Praise God, you, and the others are OK. Your car can be replaced.

I flew in and out of Traverse City a month ago to visit my friend and my old Blackwing (I sold him my 22 and replaced it with a 24). Beautiful part of the country up there.

looks like she might have been asleep. I didn't see her head move at all and then all of sudden swerve. Maybe she was on the phone, unsure from the video posted. I don't know if you have a higher res video to check but wondering if that kind of thing changes your local law with fault.

I would be very surprised if they don't total your car.

I was hit a year ago in my Golf R and loved that car, but when it happened I didn't care about the car at all. I was just happy no one got hurt. I had my two 5y olds with me at the time and if they guy hit me a split second later one of my kids could have been really hurt. The guy hit my front wheel and A pillar, if he hit my B pillar pretty sure my kid on the passenger side would have got injured.
I imagine this accident with someone coming at you head on like that can put things into prospective pretty quick. Nice job quickly swerving, pretty fast reaction when you think about how you wouldn't have expected someone to just drive right into you. You swerved before the red car hit the minivan... you noticed pretty immediately.

Good to hear you came out alright. I was thinking the same thing as I watched the video and thought, as the red car started to cross the yellow line, "what would I have done in this situation?"

Not a whole lot different. A counter swerve to the left would have involved the Jeep, and swinging farther right would only have resulted in going off the road earlier, which still would have put the Caddy's left rear in the path of the errant Hyundai.

Good response time! Braking hard to minimize the impact is really all one could do there.

The silver lining to this is the car hit that car in front of you or else this could have been a head on collision with a very different outcome. Glad no one was hurt.
