How 'under the radar' is your Blackwing?

To be fair, the number of car people I tell that I've got a Blackwing coming and respond "whats a Blackwing" is to damn high.

I"ve had to explain what it is way to many times and I don't even have the car get. I don't even want to know how many times I'll have to inform people what it is once I have it and they hear the exhaust.

GM needs that Blackwing badge to come out faster...
Not everyone thinks the same. If mine arrives w a badge (it won't, but if) I would remove it immediately. Don't need to tell anyone else what my car is. Also won't be getting CT5VBW on my plates.

One of the major features of the 5BW that I enjoy is that is completely undercover especially if you option with certain colors and no carbon pack. I get virtually zero attention in mine (shadow metallic and no carbon pack just carbon brakes) and that is a MAJOR plus in my book. A true wolf in sheeps clothing.

Nobody has to tell anyone want the car is but if you have a 5V BW, people will ask when you when they hear it so you can ignore them, tell them what it is or maybe, if they see that Blackwing badge they won't have to ask you.

I guess for me its just a way to prevent having that conversation but if you like those conversations then a de-badge or not having the new one is a good way to go.

In Europe it was pretty common for owners of M and AMG cars to debadge. Not sure how it is now, considering the over-the-top design elements on those cars!

That's one of the things I love about the BW, it can be a track monster that looks like an Uber (depending on exhaust setting)

By-and-large I'm sure most folks feel that if they spent 6 figures on a car, they want everyone to know it - but there are definitely advantages to people not knowing for anything that's taking up daily driver type of duties.

As an aside, the new Blackwing badges are pretty subtle - you'd still need to really know what you're looking for.

Isn't this counter-intuitive?
The vast majority who are non-car people won't care what your car is.
Marque-specific car people, who aren't up on Caddy, will now start asking what that is.
Car nerds will engage to talk about it being a Blacking AND de badging thoughts and tips ;)

TBF, I always thought de badging was an aesthetics thing and people liking the clean look. As Nor cal points out maybe 'stealth' was a thing back in the day, but the 'sportiness' of cars now is so obvious it doesn't need a decal or a n.n number on the back.

Edit: I just had a flashback to my youth when in the 90s we all weirdly either had CRXs, Civic Si's, or MR2s and one of the guys swapped around the 1.5 on the back of his CRX. He did actually have a few non-car people ask him what the hell

I had a 1st gen Lumina Eurosport (1990). I took the Lumina script off the back, separated the letters with a hobby saw and put them back on reversed to spell "ANIMUL". It got lots of comments. My wife got a speeding ticket and it had ANIMUL as the car model written on it.

It is funny how some people get a lot of attention (relatively speaking) and some people seem to get none. Not sure if it has anything to do with paint color, location, or what.
Like I said it doesn't get as much attention on the road as the Lotuses (Lotii?) that I have owned, but it got way more interest at the Cars & Coffee show I took my Blackwing to. A lot of people wanted to talk to me about it, almost no one ever wanted to talk to me about the Lotus. My guess is this has something to do with knowledge of the car. Most people just aren't familiar enough or in the market for a Lotus compared to the Blackwing is my guess.

I wouldn't overlook observation of the person owning the car. I don't participate in these threads much anymore after I realized I don't actually notice if people are looking. If my wife is with me or she is driving the car she will tell me these things, and it's quite a bit with this car. But I don't personally notice if it's just me.

I get more compliments on my Jeep than the 5BW. -In Arizona that it entirely expected. But, a few weeks back a homeless guy came up to me while I was leaving the car to go into a restaurant and said, “is that a Blackwing?” I was floored and hung out a bit and chatted with him.
+1 to more compliments on the Jeep. The funny thing is that all those compliments towards the Jeep come from females. I have yet to have a dude tell me how cool it is. No complaints here.

I think these anecdotes need the context of what the car looks like.

A car in Dark Emerald Frost, Electric Blue, Blaze Orange, or Infrared Tintcoat wearing the Tech Bronze wheels and all the carbon bits is going to stand out juuusst a bit more than a carbon-less car in Rift with the base wheels.

My car is Raven black with base wheels and no carbon. Those who know, KNOW. Even a few who don't know figure something is up when they hear it.

That can definitely be part of it for me. I removed the extra badging off my M4 right after I got it. I did not like how it was positioned. I would have removed the BMW logos too and replaced them with something cooler, like an Iron Maiden Eddie, had I kept the car.

That's crazy because I have the windows tinted and still feel like I'm in a fishbowl when I drive the car, I've been followed to a gas station twice now by well-meaning dudes wanting to confirm if its a Blackwing, had people weave through traffic to pull along side, came out to see I guy taken a selfie in front of the car and a motorcyclist attempted to race me. Had a guy in a Julia and another in what I assume was a Zl1 ( no badges but the aero gave it away) pull up to next to me at a light and give me the Revs.

Sunday we stopped for gas after church and my wife and I got out to admire a guy with a sweet 1970 Superbee resto. While the bump is going and we're talking to the owner, two dudes pull up in a 2020 S3 and start looking and walking around checking out the car.

I truly figured a black sedan with no outrageous badges or aero would be a sleeper but this is NOT proving to be the case. That and the fact that, outside the car, the car is LOUD, especially on decel you can hear it isn't a run of the mill Caddie. Had to have the wife drive it to realize this latter fact.

You very well have the most popular car on the forum. Amazing too as it is so new. I don't envy the attention you receive at all. I'm thrilled to report in 4 months with a CT4-V Blackwing and a M4 Competition, I received a combined 0 compliments and had 0 gas station conversations. I could not be more pleased about that, as I do not like the attention.

@668LT4 to be fair I live very near a racetrack and four communities packed full of car people. But Yes you're right I'd much prefer much less attention. I assume like every other relatively new car around here the excitement of seeing it leaves after a few sightings. I remember being equally geeky when some of my neighbors down the street got their LC500, Mustang Mach E GT, and C8s.

Hell, I have both carbon packs and I've gotten a grand total of... 2 thumbs up. It's still really stealthy and I absolutely love it.

I was thinking Iowa Colony must be a very happening place! Probably makes sense nobody around me cares, I live in Denver and it is mostly trucks and SUVs out here.

Outside of car shows, I think maybe only one person has said anything in reference to the car. I thought electric blue would demand some attention. Apparently in my area if it's not $150k or more, no one cares.

That'd be a helluva trick if you didn't notice someone standing in front of you asking a question ;)

My post is referencing the OP's observation of others reacting while you're driving. I get people who talk to me all the time about the car and not one knows what it is. People simply like the looks and because they don't know what it is they're curious. At least that's the only people I get, except at the track.
