My 2018 Canyon with the HF 3.6L had a plastic housing and a cartridge filter. It was easy to change since it was on top of the engine, it just had one of the A/C lines running right over it.
I loved the location on my E36 M3, right there in from on the M50X engines.
The C5 and the CT4 BW are both super easy. It does spill a little oil on the alum subframe, but it's not a big deal.
