V-Series Cadillac(s)?
2024 CT5V Blackwing, Coastal Blue Metallic M6
2024, Manual transmission. 21,000 miles.

Last Thursday I did a pull on the freeway check engine light flashed but went away within seconds. Drove the vehicle over the weekend with no problems. Woke up Monday morning for my 3 mile commute to work and heard a very distinct tick. When I got off from work started the vehicle and heard the tick again opened the hood, look around and the tick was coming from the left side of the engine.

Got it to Sewell the next morning and the service guy immediately noticed the ticking. Called me Wednesday and told me lifter in bank 5 malfunctioned and pushrod bent. Stated GM advised to replaced the bank of lifters.

Got the call today that upon the service tech inspecting the full teardown, more damage was found and he was recommending a new LT4.

Of course I'm pissed. Called and opened a case with customer care., only impressive thing is with the damage I couldn't tell driving except for the ticking.

Ugh!! My sympathies.

Well let me be the first to make excuses for the manufacturer (which happens way too often around here). "Well, all manufacture's have issues don'tcha know..." "Hey the LT4 6.2s don't have anything to do with the L87 and it isn't even conceivable that the LT4 may have a similar issue to the recalled L87s." "Just ask GM, the L87 is totally fixed and the LT4 doesn't have the same issue."

All joking aside, I sure hope GM goes to great lengths to try and make this right with you. I just barely got out of the Goat Rodeo and a blown engine like this would be absolutely crushing. 21,000 miles? Absolutely shameful! Please keep us posted on how they deal with your issue.

Sorry to hear this…I was hoping coastal blue was immune. Did you put on all 21k miles?

Yep, submitted build in June of 2023 and got delivered in early March of 2024.

Sorry to read this. At least you will get a brand new motor.

Yup, I don't know....I just dropped my oil and filter with Heavy Magnets all the way around the bad boy! The amount of Iron Powder has been of concern. I am breaking in a BRAND new 3.0l Diesel and pulled the filter on that with 1k miles typical break in was noted and was actually very clean? Compared to a GM V8 break in at similar miles I was impressed how the little diesel looked? Now the LT4 has taken me back with amount of iron powder in that can. Normally, my vehicles show the Iron powder fines diminishing over subsequent changes. Quite the opposite on my Lt4 progressively getting worse? Not sure what to think as I am still progressively breaking in the engine.....

I just watched a You Tube video of an engine block out of a 2024 Escalade with "FOUR" miles on it ! It had a broken rod connector . Upon inspection it appears that the wrist pin was not seated correctly. Then they find the wrist pin clip broken inside the engine. Its amazing how such a small part will grenade an engine. My brother in law is currently looking for a used car and he is looking at alot of Chevy's with the 6.2's. I am a Chevy fan ,but I am recommending that he look at a Ram truck instead. Getting a 6.2 will be a flip of a coin on a future disaster.

Same here and have nothing but great experiences with GM V8's but obviously something fell apart after during and after COVID.....

Put over 115000 miles on my 2016 Camaro SS with no issues. It's gotta be something going on with their supplies/parts since Covid.

I would just be worried about "who" is installing the new engine and do they know what they are doing. At the assembly line it goes like clockwork how things are installed. Once its all together it can be a nightmare to work on.

They told me its their best guy who has done many LT4s. They said when he did the full teardown he went to the foreman and advised it's best to do a new engine.

My salesman busted his v3 engine after nodding it and the same guy installed his new block and its been running with no issues.

I am gonna push GMyo extend the power train and bumper to bumper warranty due to the major repair.

My brother pushed Mercedes to extend his warranty after a brand new 2024 ECU issue and he had to wait over 2 months to get his car back. It costs the dealership nothing to give that courtesy.

Really sorry to hear it @marcmac

Updated the blown motor list here: CT5BW Blown Motor Registry
Sewell told me the engine was expedited and should be in TX soon. I have a case open with cadillac customer care. No complaints with the dealership they handled situation well.

My problem is with GM, and thereAFM and these shifty lifters since covid. I thought I was avoiding the problem with a manual. One thing I can say is the engine still ran very well even with the damage from the lidter.

I agree the "whole" post COVID crap is the problem! Everything is just pretty much 2x the crap factor prior to COVID. We were already building just cheap ass crap of everything and now it's worse. My kids are screwed and will bare the brunt of this global catastrophe in the making....which has been progressively getting worse and COVID pretty much the "death Kneel" and all for nothing.....

I have no concerns about Sewell swapping your motor. They will do a great job.

AFM should have never been added to the LT4. We are not buying these cars to eke out an extra .5 MPG. We pay the guzzler tax, we fill with the best premium we can find.

I tell my son all the time I would happily pay an extra 25% for a car that is made with premium parts and attention to detail. If Cadillac even added 5k to the MSRP of this special Blackwing, and made sure every LT4 was perfect and built for hundreds of thousands of trouble free miles, would anyone pass on buying it for the extra 5k? This is not the car they should be pinching pennies on to sell more of. Heck, they make so few anyways, I'm not even sure why they keep doing so.

I know everytime I drive mine I love it so much, and long for no other car. Of course I hope it never needs a new motor, but if it does, I hope the replacement will have corrected whatever problems the original had.

Keep us posted. In the end, I think you will have a great car. Sewell will probably be much more meticulous than the factory when they install the LT4.

Sorry about your troubles! I just bought an extended warranty for my '22 5BW and I'm just going to run the piss out of it until the warranty is out and then if it breaks, I'll drop in an upgraded aftermarket motor. :D

I was looking at extended warranty options through McMulkin but isn't there a power train warranty from the factory good for 6 years/72k miles?

I ended up getting the best and easiest deal from Dennis Fitchner. He's been selling extended warranties forever and I've gotten a bunch from him with no issues. Factory extended warranty.
