I am currently in the market and am undecided between a type r and the Ct5V Blackwing for a fun daily. Looking to get those opinions who own a Blackwing now and previously a C7 Z06.

The reason I am asking about the Z06 is I had one prior and ended up ditching it. It was a great car but very annoying as a daily driver. The chassis just couldn’t put down the power without getting into triple digits first. So it was a constant annoyance to me that I could never get into the power without doing jail speed. Was just curious if the Blackwing could actually put down the power at street speeds.

Coming from a Taycan Turbo so I do enjoy the power but only if it’s useable. Also hoping it’s still a fun car on mountain roads. Live in South Carolina so I am very close to some amazing roads. Would be a lot easier if I could find one to test drive but I’ve been looking for months with none around my area.

Curb weight

Curb weight
3,188 lb.

I linked that because there's 1000 lbs difference between the two. Something I'd never looked at.

I was shopping for a Type R for a couple years but at my age it would be a little silly, but still, interested. Grabbed a used 5BW since it was stealthy and "elegant" and a V-8 supercharged shifter. The thril! I just need to learn how to drive it competently. It has the goods. I imagine they're both fire-breathing-dragons on the street, just 4cyl versus 8. I could use that Honda for quick trips to the market. I bought the 5BW for the the road/canyons.

ps. that Type R has, like, a 12 gallon tank.

oops, haha

You're sure shopping it against a wide range of competitors. A blown V8 is just not a competitor to a Japanese 4-banger. I know the Type R in Integra and Honda liveries is widely praised, and I'm sure its a very nice FWD sporty car. Just a totally different animal.

A little arithmetic comparing transmission ratios and final axle ratios will probably tell you what you're looking for in the C7 Z06 comparison. The drivetrains are basically the same. HP differences are probably not noticeable in the seat-of-the-pants. Didn't that car come with a 7-speed manual ?

2 minutes on Google provided the answer. Same ratios in 7-sp Z06 and BW for first 5 gears. 3.42 final drive in the 'Vette vs 3.73 in the BW. I can tell you from my Camaro experience, that small final ratio change makes a BIG difference. Smaller tire diameter on BW helps shorten the ratio too. The BW is heavier too, so that will obviously have an impact as well.

The BW is a great car. Not surprising the BW forum is full of fans. :)

There are other vehicles that may do one or two things great - and better than the BW. But I don't think any other vehicle has aggregate talent - so good at so many things - as the BW. That's its appeal.

If you have budget, garage space, and time to appreciate many specialists, you may be happier going that route.

I sold a 2021 FK8 Type R to get my 2024 5BW 6sp. They are such different animals but both exceptional driver's cars. The CTR is going to be better on most backroads than the 5BW in part because it is smaller, lighter, and has an incredibly locked down suspension with plenty of rebound damping. Even stock, though, it will blow off the tires in the first 2 gears. With even just a basic tune, you can get the front wheels spinning through 3rd and into 4th on cooler days.

Obviously, the 5BW is so much faster in a straight line, is bigger and more luxurious, costs a ton more, etc. But it's totally worth it for my use case: daily driving with multiple passengers most days, road trips, and just generally the enjoyment of driving it like a badass muscle car dressed in a tuxedo. Unless it is a warm day and your tires have some temp in them and the pavement is grippy, it is not the best at putting the power down in the first few gears and, if you have the TC all the way off, it gets sideways very, very easily. The handling is superb when you do get it on backroads (or track) but it's still a big girl compared to the featherweight CTRs. I did a big roadtrip this summer and on the curvy mountain roads of New Mexico, Colorado, and Montana, it was incredible and handles way better than you would expect.

The car I would tell you to look at would be the 4BW (unless you regularly take passengers in the back seat). Incredibly agile, proper amount of power to have fun on the street, better/shorter gearing, very rowdy and fun.

Well if you get a 5 BW get one with the precision package. Or if you want better handling with less weight get a 4 BW. Google the reviews of a 5 BW with the precision package. If I was going to move up from a 4 BW that’s what I’d get. I’d fancy a 992 GT3 too, but that’s over 200k. From having various 911s and other sports cars, it’s amazing just how well the chassis is on the 4 BW. You really don’t feel like you’re driving a 4 door sedan.

I have c8 z06 vehicles and also ct5v Black Wing together. I don't have any experience with the c7 since the c8 was the first time getting into a Corvette. If it were me, I would keep both the c7 Z06 and also go for the ct5v Black Wing. If you can't do that right now, then wait it out or give up something else in the garage for the ct5v Black Wing. Just my opinion so take it with a grain of salt.

* I owned Honda Civic type Rs 2023 model year. I was not very happy with the vehicle because the lack of power without modifications and also the small fuel tank and also the vehicle suffers from fuel starvation when you're taking it to the track. Skip the CTR and go straight for the Black Wing. I would take GM vehicles over Honda vehicles any day. I used to be a big JDM guy and that's how I started the car game. Honda cars are weak, but that's just another opinion of mine that you don't have to believe if you don't want to.

Thanks for all the replies gentlemen. I’m not interested the CT4 don’t care for a 6 cylinder. Typically don’t care for a four cylinder either but the chassis and steering is just so good in the CTR and it feels special to me. I may just have to drive a couple hours away to test drive one to see if I like it. Have plenty of toys to play with for the alone fun days but like something I can still have fun with my kids. Just a little concerned the 5Bw will feel like a boat. The Taycan did weigh 6,000lbs but it always felt allot smaller and lighter than it did at 7/10ths and under. Hoping the Blackwing masks its weight and size as well.
