Nevermind, I found display settings to turn off "turn-by-turn graphics"

Preface: So even before getting a 2026 and having Android Automotive OS, I have always considered AA or CP to be a temporary hack until car makers figured things out. There's nothing magical about your phone. It's a device to log into accounts. No reason your car can't do the exact same thing without needing to project your phone via another small computer. It's just an inelegant solution.

That said, I would like to have Waze directions on the big screen and music showing on the right side of my instruments cluster in Sport mode. I can't seem to figure out how to do this. The car seems to want to control the right side on its own and it always puts directions there if you have directions active.

(Yeah, I know I can use AA but it looks dumb on the big screen and I shouldn't have to but maybe I still do)

Am I missing something?

I'd rather have AA than Google built-in which GM is pushing. GM software is awful along with most automotive manufacturers. The biggest benefit of AA and CarPlay is it's the same in every vehicle. UI is simple. Maps and music are all most people want.

I do agree it would be nice if the gauge cluster had maps. Other manufacturers have done this but I've not seen one well executed yet.

Agree. App updates seem to be later on built-in systems.

Does anyone else have issues with the native Waze app showing wildly inaccurate readings for the current location? Mine is usually off by 1/4 mile to up to 3 miles!

Waze is good for police alerts but that is also part of Google Maps now. It shows alerts from both Google Maps and Waze users (Google owns Waze).

I don't pretend know all the reasons Google has not combined the two in to one offering but, according to Gemini, the integration of Waze police alerts into GMaps is not 100% complete and not real-time. That is definitely consistent with my experience that Waze has more police alerts than Maps does.

Yeah mine gets a little wonky at times with location. Pressing the Waze button gets it to refresh sometimes. What i really hate is that you the can't have waze in the split screen, only Google maps.

& I had to sign out & back in for it to update my work address, whereas both phones updated immediately on their own without any interaction.

Yes, police alerts are not that great in Google maps. I would say it's the third best app for police alerts. Waze being second and Highway radar being first. Highway radar has less delay than Waze. Google Maps is hit or miss on the alerts. If you want passive protection, here's my priority.
  1. Highway Radar
  2. Waze
  3. Google Maps

Thanks for this! I did not know there was an option to turn it off. I much prefer to see my music selection there instead.
I second this - I didn't know this option existed until you pointed it out. Thanks for the info!
