So I would say maybe other people leave their hitch on to deter assholes.

I got rear-ended while sitting at a light in my Frontier a couple of months ago. They center-punched the receiver shackle mount that sticks out a few inches. No apparent damage to my truck. The other vehicle had obvious bodywork damage and a bunch of codes showing on their dash.
