Gas Grade

Man… I just drove up the CA coast to stay at my in-law’s place for the weekend and the highest any gas stations within a couple hours offer is 91. 🤦🏽‍♂️🙂↔️
Is it any different in the Bay Area or, Truckee?

Absolutely. There’s 93 available in both those places. Truckee is crazy fuckin expensive though. Over $6 per gallon. It’s worth the Reno trip to fill the tank. Even Portola where I ended up buying a place (Truckee isn’t the same place I grew up in anymore) is cheaper by far!

I’m not sure what the deal is up on the North Coast.

Hey utopia isn't cheap. How are you going to get the Californian government to fix everything without funding?

Man, I was looking for places at the base of Mount Rose because I’d have loved to get the hell outta Cali. The problem with that was that for what we were looking for the price would be over a million. Out in Portola, I got a nicer house on 7.5 acres, for considerably less. It has everything I wanted except for the proximity to ski areas. I figure for the 750k I saved I can afford the gas, and the Blackwing! Only bad part is I’m stuck paying CA taxes. 🫣

I've been in Cali (both South & North) for a very long time and I've never seen 93 at the pump. Normally, 91 is the highest with the rare stations carrying race gas at the pump which is 100 or higher.

The Safeway on Georgia Street in Vallejo as well as the Sinclair on Fairgrounds Blvd both have 93. The Cheveron on 70 in Portola does too.

In Reno I usually gas up at the Maverick on Kietzke, but 93 is available pretty much everywhere in Reno.

Please take a pic for me the next time that you get 93 at the pump in CA not NV.

Will do! I won’t be back down that way for a couple weeks. I’m going further North to visit my mom in Eureka. But I will absolutely take a pic and tell you exactly where I’m at next time I fill er up in CA with 93.

91 is the "norm" for the most part West of the Mississippi. You can get 93, but it's rather rare.

Side note: I just got back from a week driving the PCH North of Monterey. I've NEVER seen gas prices that high. "Cheap" regular was $4.75 to well over 5 bucks. Some stations had regular for pushing 6 bucks

Yeah man… f’n CA is ridiculous. If I could’ve convinced the wife to uproot from her family and move to a mountain town anywhere but CA I’d have done it in a heartbeat.

We did a road trip a couple years back from Salt Lake to Vegas hitting all the National parks along the way. I couldn’t believe how cheap the gas was. I hadn’t seen gas at < 2 since the mid 90s out here I don’t think.

Spring and Fall are the worst. Refineries switch production from the summer formula to the winter, supply tightens, and prices rise until production is fully up and running. Rinse repeat for the next cycle of the seasons.

Right!? How is it that we refine the shit right here, but have to pay a premium? I love/hate CA!

Well they jacked the prices up last year:
"Californian drivers will have to earn an additional $600 to $1,000 a year in pre-tax income to ‘break even’ with 2024 prices"

And now they're raising them again another 75%:
"the estimated average consumer price of regular gasoline could potentially increase by as much as 75% from the April 23, 2025, price of $4.816 to $7.348 to $8.435 a gallon by calendar year end 2026”

Pretty soon your gas bill will be the same as your car note! If you like ICE, you should probably plan to move. They don't seem to want you there any more.

It must have something to do with the initiative to have only electric cars sold in CA by 2035 or some B.S. It’s a ridiculous initiative that I don’t recall being asked to vote on. Anyhow, when the time comes I’ll sell the Vallejo house and buy something in a state with better tax rates and better gas rates and by then maybe the wifey won’t mind being further away from her folks.
