What is Dolby Atmos and how does it compare to this Infiniti app?
Dolby Atmos is an immersive sound as opposed to a sigle codec like you see in most audio files. This is why the audio has to be played from a source that has the audio format for Dolby Atmos. The app will tell you if a song or audio can be played in DOlby Atmos format.
Dolby Atmos first came out for movie theaters. I call it "object based sound." Wherever the object is that is making the sound is where you hear it all around you. These models also have speakers in the ceiling for complete immersion.
For example, in a movie... the screen will be looking at a child playing waiting on his mother to call him for dinner. When the mother calls for dinner, You hear the sound coming from the right rear of the theater which is the direction of the mother who is behind your point of view looking at the child. You only hear the sound coming from that speaker/speakers where the "object is" In this case that is the mother.
If you are watching a movie where a helicopter is flying over your head, you hear the speakers above you play one at a time all the way to the rear speakers as the helicopter flies over you. This allows the audio to have each part come from a different part of the car. You can have the main singer comping from the front right, the back-up singers from the front left, and the orchestra behind you.
It first came out as just Dolby having 2D surround sound. If you remember movies having the "All Around You" shorts at the beginning of movies, that is a similar type of audio in 2D. Atmos allways audio to be broken up between speakers and that includes the speakers above your head.
Here is a youtube link to one of the shorts if you don't remember or you weren't going to movie theaters yet. haha
