2025 CT5-V
Hmmm. Wife was complaining about the speed sign reading issue in her 2025 CT5-V. Nothing on the instrument panel or HUD like it was a week or so ago. She is driving me nuts trying to figure out how to revive it. I did manage to find out that before anything, you need an active OnStar account to ensure its operation as somehow it's connected to OnStar. Ok, we got that. Found some other information called a soft reset that wasn't exactly for CT5, but figured I'd try it. It worked!

First, ensure you've got the latest Google Maps system updates. Ours was a recent update like, maybe 10 days or so ago. I'm thinking maybe that update mooked it up. Not sure. Also, for whatever reason you have to ensure offline map download is on or speed sign reading won't work. Obviously, in the Display settings, you need to ensure the sign reading is toggled on. Which it was.

Then do a soft reset of the infotainment system.

1. Car on, engine off.
2. Hold the "end call" button on the lower left on the steery wheel for about 20 seconds until infotainment screen goes dark. Then let go of the button.
3. System on the infotainment screen ask if you want factory reset or restart. Pick one. I picked restart.
4. After it gets done restarting the infotainment stuff, open the driver door then shut it.
5. Wait 3 minutes before restarting car.
6. Take car for a drive and check to see if it re-aquires speed signs. (If it doesn't, it may be time to hit that little blue OnStar button.)

Also, if you have just purchased the car and have yet to do the "Welcome to OnStar" deal with the OnStar rep while sitting in the car, that potentially can keep you from getting the car to read speed signs.

If you already knew this, fine. If not, now you know there's something you can try. I did a search and couldn't find anything on soft reset procedure, so I'm here to say it's free to try and it worked for me.

My new 2026 CT5-V traffic signs stopped working much the same as you posted after the Google Maps update. Reset as you posted did the trick. However, I noticed some serious beeping while driving. Turns out that this new update also included some submenus with in the Display > Traffic Sign Assistant setting. A notification when posted speed limit is exceeded and another when a new speed limit is found. Of course, I toggled both of these OFF. Now all is good.

The car does not "read" speed limit signs - it pulls the data from Google Maps via the onboard 5G modem. The service runs through Onstar which is why you need to activate it to get the car's data modem to start working.

On the older 'tiny screen' models the speed limit data is pulled from the map SD card so even when you're in the 'radio quiet zone' in West Virginia, you can still tell how f@#$#^ you are if a cop pulls you over :P

PS: Green Bank Observatory in West Virginia is 100% worth the 2+ hours without cell service. It's just so cool to geek out at all the science there and they do a great job explaining it all. And ho boy pretty much every paved mountain road in WV puts a grin on your face.

It definitely reads signs on the newer models. I've had it think a roads number designation was a speed limit once & it read way higher than the limit.

In fact it's a feature I hate since it could pull from Google maps but doesn't. Plenty of times when I'm on a new road wanting to know the limit but it doesn't show until it gets to a sign & reads it, whereas waze already showed me the limit when i get on the road.

Also doesn't show the limit in Google maps itself until it encounters a sign.

Edit: just checked the manual again & it says that it should pull from a database while right after that it says that it recognizes the traffic sign & displays that. I need to see if you can disable the recognition part.
