How much should I realistically expect to get for my car?

Push for the highest amount and hopefully you get higher compared with setting expectations lower than you should have done at the get-go.

I was offered 63k last month when I thought about getting a Z06 in June by the dealer for my 2025 4BW

That does not look very bright and hopefully they were taking a huge chunk off the z06 to offset that. I would definitely shop around in that case or seriously consider thinking of holding off so that you can continue to enjoy your blackwing.

I didn’t do the deal. When my vacation home sells and my gas leases start to produce royalties or I sell them outright, I might get a 992.1 GT3 or get a 992.1 C4S. But real estate is slow now for sellers. The mineral rights could make me a quick 125k though if I decide to sell them. The 125k plus 62k or so would enable me to get a nicely specked 992.1 C4S or a Targa. Or I might just keep the 4BW or move up to a 5 BW.

Porsche is a great vehicle although some of those approach exotic vehicle territory so I'm not sure if they're completely worth it but definitely a high quality specialty vehicle if you go for their specialty sports car - like the GT or turbo vehicles. Definitely not an easy task trying to get to one so make sure you have sufficient down payment and positive equity under trade because it's definitely strict requirements for those type of vehicles I suppose but not completely sure if they're worth it or not. I'm happy with my Corvettes and black wing and darkhorse. I try my best to enjoy what I have now but sometimes it's difficult for all of us I understand.

So for those following along and need an update, or who stumbled upon this thread, I did decide to sell the car and put it on Autotrader. I had several attempted scams and a few low ball offers from dealers. One offered me $82K but after a discussion when he realized that it was a base car, he retracted his offer. Another wanted me to consign it, promising me 85 or better (verbally) and then one guy rings me up Saturday morning and after a brief discussion we negotiate to 82. I started at 87 and then went to 85,500 and knowing how hard it is for an individual to sell an expensive car like this (BTDT) since we can't provide financing and such, I figured that 82 would be fair, if not slightly better than fair.

The dealer was awesome, I had the money on Monday morning, paperwork Tuesday and they picked it up Wednesday. It is going straight to Manheim, to auction, so these guys aren't going to retail it, they're just looking for a quick flip. Fortunately, I have access to Manheim through work, so if I remember, I'll check on it next week and see what it sold for. It's going to the Atlanta auction, so perhaps the market is stronger there than here. The dealer is out of MO.

This exact same thing happened when I sold my first M4 as Covid was getting under control. A dealer bought my car and sent it straight to Manheim. They sold it there for $500 more than they paid me, so not a great deal of profit but at least they didn't lose anything (I presume, not knowing what the seller fees are).

It's been real guys and gals; I'll continue to lurk and occasionally comment here on the forum, and I suspect that I will very likely return to the fold one of these days.

Thanks for the wrap-up (good info for anyone to have in the memory banks) and hope to see you around in the future. :)

@BimmerFan Is that about average for your ownership tenure? I have my original 5BW on Autotrader too, lots of mid-$80's offers from dealers, but no private buyers. Like you said, its a small population that can pay cash or get financing on a high value used car. Interest rates aren't helping either.

It's technically still for sale, but honestly I may end up keeping it/using it and then leaving my semi-unicorn BDT 5BW under cover.

It's actually a strong compliment on the BW that I kept it as long as I did. I average around 16 months tenure for cars. There were a few outliers, a corvette that I kept for 15 years, a mistake (Z4) that I kept for 6 months...

I submitted a quote to both Carvana and Carmax just for fun and Carmax wouldn’t give me a number until I took it in person for an appraisal. Carvana offered me $74K. It’s a manual 2023 with 17K miles. It has middle tier seats, pdr, sunroof, red seat belts, blue calipers, parking package. I know options don’t really add much, but damn was Carvana a low ball.

uhhhh, yeah. Not sure what the heck they are thinking..

They are thinking, we may need to put tires on it, it's hard to sell a manual, and they would be paying on it for 3 months until it sells.

That's why I took 82 for mine from a dealer that immediately flipped it on manheim. Let me know if you want a referral.

Can you share your autotrader link?

Final update for those following along:

'23 BW 6-spd, 10K miles, base car black/black. I sold it to a dealer for $82K

He sold it on Manheim for $85K. It probably cost him about $1K to ship it and pay fees. (I suspect, based on my research, that it took several tries before he got someone to buy it on Manheim.)

The buying dealer now has it listed for sale for $95K. Hey, he can try, right? LOL

So yeah, perhaps I left some money on the table. FWIW, I had it listed for sale and the only interest I got in it (except from one guy who said he may come by next week) was from dealers, and they were all interested in it in the 70s. I could maybe have sold it for more after months of dealing with people wanting test drives and others who couldn't get financed, etc. BaT wanted me to list it with an $80K reserve, which I thought was too low.

So ends the adventure.

I think you did fine for the time and effort. There is a cost for going through too much BS.

Yeah, thanks. I'm now a professional car salesperson, so you'd think I could easily do it myself, but not having the dealership behind me to provide financing and advertising, I know what a struggle it can be to sell a nearly new car that costs close to $100K. Most cash buyers would rather pony-up another few grand and buy a new one, and 80% of the people out there (it seems) can't qualify for a loan.

I've set an alert on the car so we'll see how long it takes them to move it, and how many price drops they have to do.

It was a 4.8 on Manheim, so I guess they didn't like the paint (it was perfect inside). Another reason that an individual buyer may have been a tough sell, the car sat around for quite a while before I bought it, and the paint showed the result.

LOL, look at me, Mr. Rationalization.

Totally agree, I always add a factor to make the overall sales process as easy as possible and at the speed necessary to complete my entire transaction.
