Yes I started a break-in oil change this weekend and plan on switching to the K&N, but I ran into a snag already, I can't seem to get the factory can off. I've tried several different filter wrenches and can't budge it. I don't want to do the screwdriver through the middle (if that fails you're screwed). Anyone else run into this ? If so, how is this resolved ?

Have you tried oil filter pliers? Factory oil filter on my Ram 6.7CTD was impossible to get off with normal oil filter wrenches, so bought a pair and easy-peasy

I learned the other day that the XP Wix filters are designed for the extended change intervals in modern cars. The filtering performance isn't as good on a micron level as the non XP filter. I thought the XP was just better all around, but for some it may not be.

Everyone here should probably be doing shorter intervals (3000-5000 mi) so the OEM filter would be fine unless there's some test results that show WIX, Mobil 1, etc perform better.

Mobil 1 just got their cleaning 5W-30 Dexos approved. Going to alternate that formula and the extended performance version since the Valvoline restore and protect isn't Dexos certified.

I had the same problem after having the dealer do the first Oil Change. This worked. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07G5Q4MNZ?ref_=ppx_hzsearch_conn_dt_b_fed_asin_title_5&th=1

I've always used an oil filter band wrench with a 3/8" ratchet and extension. I would think it next to impossible to crush a filter with this style tool so long as the band is deployed near the base.

Mine is a K-D tool 2380 but it looks like K-D was bought by apex tool (which also owns gear wrench):

The PF64 is about 3" in diameter; I looked around and the only ones I see that fit it use an attached handle instead of a 3/8" drive.

If I was going to buy something today I would try the OTC 4565:

Nope tried those, it's smooth metal on painted smooth metal, it fails to grip the filter and just slides around it. Those might work if the filter is only slightly stuck, that's not what I'm dealing with here.

Yeah if the tech didn't put a layer of oil on the filter, it gets glued on there so tight you basically have to destroy the filter to remove it. Apparently that's how GM likes it because that's how they come from the factory and it's how the dealer did my free (and last) oil change.

The sheer STUPIDITY of the people at general china motors that build these engines is beyond belief ! Their is absolutely no reason an oil filter is that over-tightened ! I have changed oil on many vehicles in my days and never seen anything like this !

Indeed, if you try to rotate the filter before the band is tight enough, it slips.

Yea, unbelievable, you could almost see how the people at the factory would do something like that, they'll never see the vehicle again, but the dealer techs doing it ? They must know they will have to deal with that shit on the next service :hb
