Need some advice... do I go for a car in transit that's 1000 miles away but has my options just with a few extras I'm amenable to or do I be patient and wait for my build locally?

I've called over 20 dealers in Florida. Many have ADM (or stupid mandatory add-ons.... LoJack...wtf), the rest seem to be impossible to get allocation information from or have long wait lists with no end in sight. Ironically my best option seems to be the first one I went to and is closest to me that had previously told me they'd require an ADM but changed their tune more recently. I'm first on their list supposedly but the other dealer close by told me I was first then a month after putting my order in I found out I was third. It was like pulling teeth getting info but the manager "thinks" they'll get allocation relatively soon but there's none on their estimated shipments report as of now. And of course there's a non-zero chance my options could be constrained from ordering when they do get allocation.

I'm planning on trading my Rivian R1T for the tax offset which means a 2000 mile road trip. Not loving the idea of the first 1000 miles on the 5BW being highway (I'll make sure to vary the speed and RPMs) but doesn't seem like the end of the world. I'm a smidge concerned the value on my truck will tank or the dealer I order from will low ball me on it since they know they have me by the balls. Leaning towards the road trip but super torn.

Sounds like you are worried about time affecting your plans. In that case, I would go with the car in transit.

A bird in the hand...

I mean there's no real need to have it now outside of the child in me not wanting to wait. I can try to put my big boy pants on and be patient haha. I think it's more just the uncertainty of the whole thing.

I was thinking about the time effect/uncertainty on the trade...

Or drive the Rivian there for the road trip, fly back one way, and have the car transported. More money, less fun, less different stress about those first 1000 miles ...

You were reading my mind! Bird in hand and way less stress. I hate the "fear of the unknown".

Get the car... Don't stress about a hundreds of dollars difference in your trade

A 1000 mile road trip in the Blackwing is nothing. Vary the RPMs like you wrote, and you'll be golden.

Like yourself, my only worry would be the trade-in value on the truck. Get their quote in writing, pending inspection of course, and if they don't hold up their end of the bargain (assuming of course that the truck is as represented) then walk away. Yes, you blew a weekend and 2000 miles, but that's the chance that you take.

There's also the factor that you didn't mention of the price of the in-transit car versus what you want, actual selling prices when you figure in all of the dealer b.s., doc fees, etc.

Another option is to ship both cars both ways. Or hire a driver to do it for you. Or sell the truck yourself locally and just eat the sales tax savings for peace of mind.

Best of luck, let us know what you decide.

Wait and get exactly what you want. The last 3 cars I have ordered have been 6-12 month waits. Waiting sucks but years later when I have exactly what I wanted, I am glad I waited. Pass the marshmallow test!

Well I decided to make the road trip. Should be a fun adventure and the extra options (sun roof... florida) will be nice to have. Less dealer fee and a solid trade-in value makes it worth it.

The car arrived today and I'll be making the journey next weekend. I'll take a bit of a detour and go through the smokeys and hit Tail of the Dragon on the way back. I won't be able to flog it but should be fun still. I'm sure I'm going to get a call that I've got allocation nearby on Thursday 🤣.

People behind you , on the "the Dragon" will be saying......." why is that Blackwing going so damned slow . Move or get out of the way ! "

Top speed 80 mph. But that just gives you more time to admire the suspension and ride quality.
