My first car was an ’01 Bullitt back in 2007. She was my baby, and I was so happy driving her with the few mods I had: a Bassani catted X-pipe, Borla Stinger catbacks, H&R Super Sport springs, and Maximum Motorsports full-length subframe connectors. I had a ProCharger P-1SC ready to install, but life had other plans when I lost my job and somebody decided to hit-and-run her while I was parked and asleep.
I purchased a daily driver — a ’13 Ford Fusion in 2013 — but that didn’t last long, so I got rid of it and bought an ’08 GT500.
The Shelby’s clutch went out on me, so I had to replace it, and the car lasted me until 2018. That’s when I let a good friend drive her, and she overheated. Truth be told, it wasn’t his fault—just bad luck. He was stuck in LA traffic in the summer with the A/C on, and the engine just went. That’s when I bought an ’18 ATS 2.0L 6M and fell in love, despite it only having four cylinders. I still have her; she’s sitting in my garage with 77k miles and still drives like new.
Ever since I bought the ATS, I’ve been craving another American V8. I toyed with the idea of an ATS-V, but I decided it would only scratch the itch for so long before I realized I was still missing two cylinders.
When the C8 Z06 was announced, I immediately placed a deposit, hoping to buy one at MSRP. A few years went by, and I stopped wanting to spend so much money on the car. Then I saw the CT5-V Blackwing — the spiritual successor to the CTS-V — and the fact that it came in a 6M really piqued my interest.
I was torn between the C8 Z06 and the CT5-V Blackwing for about a year, but eventually the Blackwing won me over because of the manual transmission and all the raving reviews. Sure, I could have tons of fun with the Z06 on the street and on the track, but driving my ATS in manual at night just speaks to me on another level. There’s something about shifting your own gears that feels so visceral. I feel so connected to my car when I row my own gears—I still remember the feeling when I hit my first heel-toe downshift in my GT500.
I had a build order and had been looking for an allocation but couldn’t find one. I started getting nervous that I’d never receive one, especially since I wanted not only a 6M, but also the Precision Package, CF1, CF2, and the carbon-fiber seats.
I finally found a car built almost to my exact spec. The only trade-offs are a sunroof and blue brakes — I was hunting for a hardtop with red brakes — but with the 6M, Precision Package, and both CF aero kits on the table, plus allocations being low thanks to the Deep Ocean package and production ending in December, I couldn’t say no.
I just signed my financing paperwork on Tuesday, and I’m ordering the auto transport tomorrow. I used LaFontaine Cadillac in Michigan, and I’m in SoCal, so hopefully I’ll have my new baby within a week or two.
