EV Thoughts Thread: cause the old farts did their usual thing

Thanks for doing the math. The thing that still blows up the value proposition for EVs is that after 4-5 years you'll need a new battery. Unless things change, that new battery tends to cost at least as much as a new EV sometimes multiples of a new EV. Maybe being able to repurpose your old...

    Engine Failure

Yeah this blog post goes into more detail. Apparently the 0W-40 is just for engines that are at risk due to contamination or manufacturing defects. https://gmauthority.com/blog/2025/05/should-you-use-0w-40-oil-in-your-non-recalled-gm-6-2l-l87-engine/

CT5-V What don't you like about your CT5-V Blackwing?

Can't be a whole lot worse than old man in jorts with white new balance sneakers the Vette community has to contend with. ;)

OEM 4BW Graphite replacement wheel - part numbers?

Rear wheels should be wider by a half inch I think

CT5-V What don't you like about your CT5-V Blackwing?

Pr Previous gen ATS and CTS had more aggressive styling IMO.

    CT5-V My own Pre-delivery checklist

sounds like a great way to pay more for an even longer ride at the goat rodeo.

    Engine Failure

You're probably on to something. GM likely doesn't want to pay to get the entire fleet retested with 0W-40 as standard even though 0W-20 contributed to a ton of engine failures.

CT4 limited production of 50 units

They must be snorting their lunches because the only "marketing" they seem to have done for either of the CT4 or CT5 since launched is to let a bunch of YouTubers drive them. That may be how you reach a modern audience, but they're missing an entire segment that still primarily consumes...

Oil was absolutely a contributing factor. Don't take it from me, take it from an expert:

Narrowed down to 3 colors - help me out, pictures encouraged!

One caveat to that is that many of the colors look very different in indoor lighting. To really see how good they are, you'll want to see them in real sunlight. My $0.02.

    Engine Failure

The original guidance to dealers was to check the ECU for evidence of the problem (IIRC cam phase alignment). If the ECU hadn't recorded the engine as out of spec, the dealers were to change the oil to 0W-40 Supercar, swap out the oil fill cap with a "0W-40" cap, and give the customer a new page...

    Water/Condensation in Headlight Housing

I saw a lot of 4BW Ct4s seem to have issues with the headlights going yellow due to the led driver unit going bad. Should be pretty common for the dealer to be replacing headlights under warranty.

    PDR - dash cam

Make sure you're using a high endurance / professional SD card that can handle a lot of writes. You don't want to find out that your card has failed when you need it for an accident.

    Engine Failure

It's only for the L87 engine. The LT4 is a cousin but a fairly different animal. Plus the LT4 has always had 0W-40 so it had a thicker film of protection the entire time. Putting 0W-20 in a big 'ol V8 regardless of use was pretty crazy for the L87. I know they say the root cause was improper...

    Buying a pre-owned high MSRP 2024 CT5VBW or a new 2025 model?

There are rumors that the surround video recording will return in 26 but as a paid for cloud subscription service. As is in the 25 there doesn't seem to be any way to record the surround video feed unlike 24 and earlier.

    Gas Grade

Well they jacked the prices up last year: https://californiaglobe.com/fl/brace-for-impact-california-gas-prices-to-increase-in-2025/ "Californian drivers will have to earn an additional $600 to $1,000 a year in pre-tax income to ‘break even’ with 2024 prices" And now they're raising them again...

    Gas Grade

Spring and Fall are the worst. Refineries switch production from the summer formula to the winter, supply tightens, and prices rise until production is fully up and running. Rinse repeat for the next cycle of the seasons.

Killing time while waiting for my order to arrive

Now we don't get any of that. GM will give you at least three different ETAs depending on who you ask now. After production the car's essentially go into a black hole and you don't REALLY know what's going on until it is offloaded at the destination railhead.

What were your must have options?

One feature I needed to NOT have was the sunroof. The 4BW has very little headroom so losing 2+ inches for the sunroof was not an option. Also many have said the Alcantara wheel was a pain to keep from becoming a gross mess of oil and gunk so I did not spec that even though it seems like a good...
