Has anyone gone from 4V to 5V

I bought a 4V 6MT in Dec 2024. Only cars I considered were the two BWs. I ultimately went with the 4V because I thought it would be more fun for my usage. My commute is 4miles each way, on surface and neighborhood streets. I don't track the car but I do a fair amount of country/canyon driving on the weekends. I rarely take road trips in this car and rarely use backseat. It was hard to even test drive manual versions of the car and I only drive the 5BW MT once. For a while, I was leaning toward 5BW for the V8 and because I felt like the car wouldn't depreciate. Ultimately, chose 4V because I thought it would be more fun to drive and it hasn't disappointed.

My son is looking for a used 4V (low mileage 2022 is in his price range) but he has been pushing, just let me take yours and you need to get a 5V. I still have this itch to have the 5V from before. I know, as far as cars go, that it will be a good "investment". I'm worried my daily driving will be more cruising at 1800 rpm than working the gears without going 100mph I can do in the 4V. Worried about the 5V gearing because I love this transmission and want to use it.

Has anyone switched? Thoughts on how it went for you

I switched. No regrets here.

At the time the price was out of reach for me on the 5 so I went with the 4. It was a fun car to drive for the 2 years I owned it. However the 5 was always in my mind and made the decision to trade. Like I said no regrets.
 
Seems to be a popular move based on numerous data points I've experienced. The 5BW will commute just like your 4BW. The LT4 has loads of torque and doesn't need RPM for city driving making it even better suited to your use case. I think there is a bit of a misconception on how versatile the LT4 paired to a manual is. The entire premise of the 5BW is that it's content going to Target as it is cutting 0-60 hot laps and going 90mph in 2nd at your favorite road course.

Your son should go into sales. 😁 It seems to me your only real choice is what options you get on the 5BW.

I'm headed to a conference next week and I should be able to drive a 5V 6MT while I am there. It's doesn't have PP - which I would like to try and feel like I would want. As a PP owner, what's your take on it.
 
I currently own both with manuals. The 5 is better in many ways and I find it more fun to drive than the 4, even just tooling around town. It has a dangerous edge to it, too, which is fun if you are a lunatic and turn everything off. But the 4 is also a wonderful car. If I had to choose, it would be the 5BW with zero hesitation.
 
Here is a good thread about the PP ride quality.

My recommendation is to get it if 1) you do track and back road driving or 2) if you were planning on getting the CCB, at which point it is only an additional $9k. It is a very expensive package to get if you are fine with the iron rotors and is subtle enough that will only get the benefit at the handling limit.
 
I would not spec CCs standalone. I definitely prefer feeling those imperfections a little. I have this fear I am going to lose a bit of the - for lack of a better word - precision there is with the 4. That's why I have assumed I would want a PP car. Gonna be keeping my eye out for a PP car I can drive somewhere near me.
 
Not sure how old your son is, but I would trade the 4BW for the 5BW to get the most return possible, and then find him a non-molested ATS-V coupe to hoon in. Win win and everyone is happy

Well, I am wanting to get him a slightly newer car for college since he will be doing 250mile road trips home. He has a 2018 Golf R 6MT that we paid $31K for 2.5 years ago, it's worth $30,700 now per KBB. I told him since he got a significant scholarship, we could trade that and get something around $50K. Since he wants a manual performance car, the options are pretty limited - Used 4VBW, F80 M3 or a closer to new Golf R. I liked idea of Integra Type S for reliability/easy maintenance but he ruled out due to FWD. He would definitely be winning if I just passed down my 2024 4V BW

He sounds like a good kid. Give him the 4, sell the Golf and use that $ for a down payment on a 5. 🤷🏻‍♂️
 
At one point last year I was going to order a new 4BW because I loved my 22 so much and wanted a different color. End up getting a 5BW instead and I’m not sure I could ever go back to the 4. Here is what I like better:
  • It feels more special all the time.
  • I’m ok driving it slowly more often.
  • Still had plenty of power when it is warming up.
  • extra leg room for my kiddos
  • sound and power, obviously.
  • looks
  • Stereo
  • Extra camera’s
  • Bigger sunroof
I have a 4 mile commute as well and, yeah it feels silly to have all this for that, but it’s ok, I have earned it.

It’s my 77th car and far and away my favorite.
 
I traded in my 4BW for a 5BW two weeks ago, and the 5 has been better in nearly every way. The only area where I still give the edge to the 4 is nimbleness. (I didn’t get PP.)

The 5 definitely feels heavier, but in my limited experience it also seems a little easier to rotate in tight corners, mainly because the LT4’s torque delivery feels much more linear. The 4 felt tighter in the corners, but it was also a little harder to “right-foot steer.” It felt slightly less predictable. So it would come down to personal preference.

That said, I’m only two weeks in and I’m far from a seasoned performance driver, so take my opinion for whatever some random weirdo on the internet is worth.

Thanks. I'm gonna drive a 5V today for only second time. I may check in with you in a month or so and get your updated thoughts
 
I also just recently went from a 4BW to the 5BW. The 4BW is more nimble for sure, which was the first thing I noticed. The next thing I noticed is the gearing differences and the power band. The 5BW is more to my liking as you get the torque shove way down low, where I felt the 4BW was kind of gutless in the lower RPMs and that is with the taller gearing in the 5BW. I also love how in 6th gear I can now cruise comfortably below 2K, where the 4BW was turning much higher RPMs at the same speed. Other than the size and power differences, I didn't think the cars would be much different, since I bought both sight unseen, but they are. I love the light up door handles, light up kick plates, power folding mirrors, extra cameras, hands free trunk release, extra carbon fiber on the interior, bigger screens, etc. All the things I was thinking my $88K sticker priced 4BW should have come with but didn't. While I really enjoyed owning the 4BW, I absolutely love owning the 5BW. Good luck!
