Given history of engine failures, you'd have to be either totally ignorant of the issue or be a gambler to get into it without a powertrain warranty. The issue is that dealers are trying to sell these cars at basically normal car prices and wait for these that don't know any better.

I'd take the gamble all day long, but to your point, at well below market price. If it was a good color and a manual, then maybe $85k - $87k.

I've been looking for a blackwing for 2 years now. Came across all this stuff. Caveat emptor for sure! Dealers know they can scam the average person. Especially on these used ones that have stories..

Although on the flip side, I did come across a 2026 ct5 blackwing with less than 1,000 miles. Clean. Used car at a GMC dlr in denver. Story was that it was a GM company car or display vehicle. Did all the research and car came back clean. I also called SM and asked them to run the VIN to see if someone used the cetificate for the free course. They said it had never been used and they would make an exception to allow me to use the certificate for a free class even though id be the second owner. Kinda cool. I didnt end up getting this particular one but it did factor into my mental math on proce since I was getting a free $4k course. Just FYI if anyone is looking at a used 2026 with some kind of corporate use story behind it.

1) wanted to thank everyone for the thread as I didn't know that these warranty codes existed and weren't covered under carfax et al.
2) wanted to give a heads up in case anyone searches that VIN.

I don't think alot of people realize this point you make. Manufacturer notes dont show up in carfax. In fact some manufacturers treat this information like confidential info only shareable with the owner. As if it sticks with the owner and not the car. For instance if you call a Mercedes dealer, they will not share this level of information unless youre the owner. So if youre shopping around, youre kinda screwed. Unless you find a cool service advisor that will divulge it. Ive never had an issue with GM though. They'll pull any VIN you want. In addition to general service history, you can see:
-Specific tech notes (carfax might just say: transmission service. But the GM system will tell you the nitty gritty that the entire drivetrain was dropped out and the transmission replaced for instance)
-Warranty blocks
-Validate and extended warranties like CPO

So did Sarchione divulge the car's history and warranty blocks, or were they trying to sell the car as a regular pre-owned with an intact warranty?

It probably would have been during the worst part of the buying process; the finance guy. Probably would be slipped in with the 97 documents "you acknowledge this car his certain warranty limitations". Right when you think you're at the home stretch they drop that on you. I have no idea, but this is my guess.

One really has to be on their A game and willing to walk when things feel off. You can always chill overnight and revisit.

It's not the loan, or the check that you write that is the problem, you still have to sit in the finance office for all the legal paperwork and that is where ALL the shenanigans happen.

I'm surprised GM sent cars with CF packages and CF seats to Spring Mountain. When I was there in January, none had any carbon whatsoever but they all did have CCB's and no sunroofs.

Half the time the salespeople have no idea. Regardless them wasting your time is not cool and due diligence on their end should have been done.

Since they don't respect the buyer's time perhaps we should waste some of theirs. Let them know your interested, Ready to send a deposit, Ask for more photos then inquire about the vehicle's warranty and see what they say. This goes for everyone reading this thread.

Being fully on the hook for something that has been beat on and not disclosed by the dealer is horrific. Somebody is gonna get rolled bad.

This was my experience as well when I bought a 2023 CPO 5BW in 2025 that was a GM showcase vehicle, although there should be any "exception" needed - the verbiage states that it's the first retail owner that has rights to the Spring Mountain course, and GM doesn't count as a retail owner. As long as it hasn't been titled in someone's name previously, you are eligible! But of course I recommend calling SM and confirming before purchase just to be sure.

I thought GM used to sell the Spring Mountain cars with branded titles, that way there's none of this BS of dealers hiding the cars history and zero implied warranties right off the bat.
