It was indeed the exhaust valve this time. They replaced it and now it seems ok. He did tell me if it comes back on again they'll likely have to replace the whole exhaust.

I would have bid on this car had I not pulled the trigger on mine a week prior. No need to say ouch, as it did not sell for that price. Add in the 5% BAT fee, and it is close to where the market is anyways. Plenty of used ones in the 88-92k range these days. These cars will hold value better...
