It might be hard to see any smoke out of the tail pipes in the daytime when you hammer it. At night with car headlights behind you, when you get on it if there’s smoke it is easier see. Maybe have a friend behind you at night and they will notice any smoke fog.

Squeeze the sides of the plastic cover and pry off with a small screwdriver or plastic trim tool. The bolt is a T40 torx I think. Then pull panel straight up. Clips hold it at the horizontal back edge.
