V-Series Cadillac(s)?
CT5-V BW 6spd
Apologies in advance for what will likely be a long and rambling post. I think I know what most of you will suggest, but I'm interested to hear all opinions.

I've had the CT5-V BW for 19 months now. It's been basically problem-free, never seen the inside of the service department. I do my own oil changes. I love it, it's great, it's not perfect, but nothing is. Except my wife ;)

So... I recently retired from my I/T career and I've started a new career in the retail automotive arena. I now have to drive to work 5 days a week, 35 miles each way, mostly Interstate. It's a waste of the BW, putting a lot of miles on it and getting lousy MPG. It's comfortable, but it is kind of loud and the roads are noisy. Something quieter and maybe a bit softer would be nice. A better stereo wouldn't hurt either. And lighter steering.

It turns out that I can get a YUGE discount on a new Audi, and so I'm considering the A6 w/V6, Premium plus (B&O, HUD, etc. but not sports suspension). I haven't driven it yet, but I have owned an older version so I know roughly what I'm in for. Competent performance and road manners, but not a very engaging driving experience with an overdose of understeer when pushed. But active cruise et. al. will be helpful on these long Interstate commutes. And better mileage. And 4 years of warranty.

My first thought was to sell the BW, as I don't need two cars and although I could theoretically afford to keep it, it is a lot of money tied-up in a occasional-use-only performance sedan. But I'm afraid that I'll quickly grow bored with the Audi, and although the wife has a nice car that I can borrow, it's an automatic and I do enjoy rowing the gears occasionally.

For further background, I do tend to be fickle, the average life of one of my cars is around 15 months. The BW has already surpassed everyone's (friends, family) expectations of how long it would last. And I don't have enough garage space, so either the wife's car or the Audi would have to sit outside, and we have lots of trees... it can be messy. But that's a minor concern, really. The BW would stay in the garage.

Of course, the other option is to sell the BW and then later buy something small and fun that I could take to the track, like a BRZ, that wouldn't be risking $100K at an uninsured event. I won't track the Caddy.

Thank you for your thoughts and patience.

Put up a temporary garage, since you only keep cars 15 months.

def sell it, i'm in the market again
Well, that didn't last long. It's black on black, 6-spd, 9500 miles... PM if interested
Audis are great but really boring now. Go buy the RS4 Cab that’s on bring a trailer website right now.
I guess you missed the part about wanting a comfortable quiet ride.

I wish I could. HOA.

I can't believe you'd consider swapping the Audi for the 5BW. I know you've been through LOTS of cars, but I think you'd regret it.

I also know you got a new Supra as your "track toy". Is that still around ? Anything else in the stable other than the wife's car ? I think other cars - not the sedan(s) - are what would matter most here. There have been - shocking to believe - EV threads here. They do make great commuters.

Curious about this new "career" too. I figured you were actually retiring when you retired. :)

Many years ago I decided "no more boring cars". An A6 will be a nice but boring car. I can't imagine going from my Blackwing to something with zero personality or spunk.

One of my other cars is a 2025 Jaguar F Pace SVR. If you want a refined, smooth car with a beautiful interior that still has a wicked side, it's a great option. I drove mine 1200 miles each way (in 1 day each time) to see the Indy 500 this year and it was excellent. It's actually the 2nd one I've had and I think they are maybe the most wrongfully overlooked high performance vehicle on the market. Tons of character, awesome engine and noises, 5 year 60k warranty plus free maintenance for that whole time.

My last car was a C7 S6. Exactly how you described it. I keep my cars or upgrade to newer model year until they switch platforms... But not with that one. I felt too buttoned up, lifeless, and boring. Could not wait to get out of it.

Was at dealer Friday, saw a beautiful new RS7...😁

It wouldn't be the first time... ;)

Supra is gone, the market is strong with that one, and I got out of it rather painlessly. I did take it the track, had a bad spin, toasted the tires and had a come to Jesus moment as I was spinning, thinking to myself, maybe I shouldn't be doing this in a $60K car with no insurance...

I am a self-described used car salesman, although I work at a highline marque store (think Italian...) all I have sold so far is pre-owned. I can't stay home, I need to be busy. Not enough stuff at home to keep me amused long term.

We had an older F-Pace on the lot, I wasn't impressed, but it was old and a base model. But I don't like SUVs, although you may be right about those being under-the-radar performance vehicles.

No EV for me.

LC or IS 500

Hmmm. Had not thought of that, the LC is gorgeous albeit expensive, and I didn't know that they still made the IS500, which is in the good price ballpark, but I'm worried may be as dull to drive as the IS350 is, and there are none anywhere near me to try.

I think I mentioned above, I can get a huge discount on the new A6, which is one of the appealing things about it. No discount for me on the Lexus.

Well you could always trade in the 5 for a (MT) 4...you would save on gas and still have a comfortable car that might also give you more opportunity for fun in mundane commuting situations.

If you weren't adverse to SUVs and non MT (I concur BTW) I would suggest a Porsche Macaan might be a fun but comfortable option. And if you weren't also adverse to EVs an Iconic 5 N or some such could be an option.

I am a big fan of convertibles...don't know your take - but a BMW Z4 440i (with MT) could be both a comfortable and fun car for the commute and beyond.

Another option could be a used BMW 3 series of some sort such as the 2004 ZHP we own...comfortable, drives great and is fun to push without necessarily risking one's license.

Best of luck!

I'm all about fun cars, but slabbing interstate is not really fun in anything. This is a rare case where an appliance is probably the best move. An already depreciated Accord with a manual transmission where you don't feel bad about the miles, stone chips, door dings, and related DD realities. Pouring miles on a brand new asset with known depreciation issues seems flawed to me.

Definitely keep the BW and see how time away from it makes you feel when you get back in it...I'm mostly saying this because I don't need to the competition when I put mine up here soon (most of you know I bought Nick's BDT so I currently have (2) 5BW).

Your retirement job is exactly what I plan to do. Retirement is bad for your health and I love being around cars and well I've spent my entire career is some form of specialized sales.

The used car idea for a 2nd car commuter is a good recommendation IMO.

Along those lines I would recommend a used Mk VI or MK VII GTI - available with MT and can be had fairly cheaply. They are fun and practical cars that can easily be made much more fun with suspension and power mods. Our MK VI GTI is a hoot to drive, always puts a smile on my face and can haul stuff pretty well too.

I was looking for a pic of the GTI loaded out when I came across this. Speaking of hauling things....the "true" SUV:

Maybe consider the BMW M3 with manual? The 2025 C&D review (although it was the comp version with auto and AWD) got 32 mpg highway, and they said the manual version (Base w/RWD I guess) had a nice ride quality. Everyone says the interiors are among the best, and some of the things that people complain about seem to be things you may be wanting.

You guys have some great ideas, but I think you're missing my two primary desires here... the CT5 is a high bar, but I want something even more comfortable but especially more quiet.

I'm leaning towards keeping the BW along with getting the audi...

BTW my other cars (wife's) is a macan S and 240i. The 2 is rather stiff and loud, the Porsche is quiet but didn't ride as well as the caddy and of course, it's not mine. I can borrow it if I'm washing it or putting gas in it... ;)

It's all moot until I drive the audi anyway, hopefully next week.

How tall is your garage? If you can go with a four post lift, you can park the Audi under the BW. Comes in handy for oil changes and such too.
