2 weeks ago I was chasing a buddy of mine who just got a new C8 - even the same color. After we had lunch at the Bent Rim Grill.........ironically.
At one point I saw 0.81 lateral Gs. I was in the lead about 30 minutes north of our lunch spot. I round a curve and found a rock that appeared to be just smaller than a basketball in my lane. I didn't think I could straddle it, so I swerved.........but not far enough. I make awful sounds, so I knew I had broken things.
But when I got out - no visible damage. But rolling it made horrible scraping noises. Even TPMS said all tires were good. We finally figured out the rim was bent far enough to make contact with the caliper. I was thankfully able to pull off the road just a few lengths from the incident.
It could have been so much worse in so many ways. Thankfully not a single vehicle passed by us during the entire ordeal.
My phone never had reception (Verizon), but we still had to drive back to Leakey to get his AT&T phone working so I could call Roadside assistance. It took 3 attempts and long, long phone menus, but when a person finally got to me it was really good.
The wrecker didn't even arrive till the next day, so again, thankfully I had a ride back to Austin. The car went to a dealer in San Antonio since it was the closest to me. Had I gone anywhere else it would have been $110 for first 10 miles, then $6 per mile thereafter. I was probably 250 miles from my house, so the SA dealer was a very attractive option.
And thankfully they got a new rim in about a week. $1300 for that. They price matched the tire at $399 and claimed it is the Blackwing-specific Sport 4S. I had to pay a $50 core charge, but kept the old rim. It also need an alignment, which they did. I'll make an end table out of rim and hopefully never have to see if its repairable........
I guess the rock was smaller than I thought since it did not damage the front fascia.
I think, but am not 100% sure though - don't the cars come standard with V-logo valve stems ? Its missing from the bent rim and all 4 of the ones on the car have the NF logo.
